Filth King, Garrisaon Creed top night of action, storytelling at Chicago Style Wrestling

Over the past few years, action and storytelling have been the pillars of Chicago Style Wrestling.

Last week, CSW’s “Inglorious Basterds” delivered that again during an eight-match card at the sold-out American Legion in West suburban Franklin Park on Friday night, April 16.

The main event saw CSW Champion “Filth King” Brubaker retain the title in a hard-fought battle with Garrisaon Creed, who was making his singles debut for the promotion. The match was set up by a wild tag-team match, which also included local veterans Vic Capri and Marshe Rockett, at the previous month’s show at the Berwyn Eagles Club.

Creed entered out first and ran down Brubaker, who then came out pumped to the cheers of the crowd. Brubaker offered a handshake, in part, to thank Creed for his service in the U.S. military.

Creed came close to winning the championship on a few occasions, but Brubaker fired up and rallied, hitting Creed with his finisher, a Fisherman Buster, to score the 3-count.

After the match Capri, leading “The Burning” with Nick Cutler and Cypher, attacked Brubaker. Capri is still upset over being stripped of the CSW Championship last fall due to a torn triceps. Creed returned to the ring to help clean house, and eventually, the two main event combatants shook hands in a sign of respect.

Another featured match was the mixed tag team match with young and colorful characters, which saw Ryan Matthews and Heather Reckless defeated CSW Women’s Champion Skye Blue and Mateo Valentine.

Matthews comes out the ring with a giant Fathead cutout of his own face and gives it to a fan to hold during the match. Valentine is a charismatic character, who entered the arena with a confident, but not cocky, swagger.

Blue has been CSW Champion for the last 14 months after defeating Dream Girl Ellie back in Feb. 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic struck in America. She is one of the fastest-rising stars on the Chicagoland independent wrestling scene, making appearances recently on AEW Dark Elevation and NWA Powerrrr.

Each side held the advantage during the match with babyfaces Skye and Valentine making a heroic comeback, but Reckless and Matthews used underhanded tactics to isolate Valentine. Reckless hit splash off the top onto Valentine after Matthews hit him with a stunner, then Reckless scored the pin.

The top match of the first half of the show was the Falls Count Anywhere match between CSW Metra Division Champion Marco Anthony and the recently-rechristened Jake From Wrestling (Jake Andrews). Yes, Jake came out with khakis and a red shirt, just like the State Farm commercials.

It was battle tooth-and-nail with the foes using a ladder, a chain and wooden door straddled across steel chairs as weapons. Anthony pulled out an old trick from WWE as he duct-taped Jake to the corner post. The referee simply shrugged his shoulders as he made the 10-count to give Anthony the victory.

CSW General Manager Steve Ahrendt, as part of a prior arrangement, came out to laud Anthony, who posed in the corner with his title to the famous “Sirius” song by The Alan Parsons Project, which is used to introduce the Chicago Bulls lineup at the United Center.

Meanwhile, Jake From Wrestling managed to extricate himself from the duct table and Ahrendt took the mic and said that Jake would get an immediate rematch for the title in a Tables Match. Jake snuck up from behind Anthony and powerbombed him through a table that was set up in the ring to win the championship.

In an absolute banger, Rockett defeated Gary Jay in an extremely physical affair. The “Stiff Robo Ginger” lived up to this moniker. Jay and Rockett exchanged knife-edge chops that would make even NXT UK Champion Walter envious. They brawled all over the ringside area before eventually returning to the center of the ring, where Rockett finished Jay with the M-80 (RKO). After the bout, Acid Jaz tried to sneak up and attack and Rockett, but Rockett caught Jazz with an M-80 out of nowhere, and challenged him to a match at next month’s CSW show on May 21.

In other action, Hades XIX defeated young AJ Flyer in the opening match. Flyer confronted Ahrendt in the ring and wanted an opportunity. Hades answered the challenge and made Flyer tap out in fairly short order, but not before Flyer got some moves in.

Jaz won an entertaining five-man scramble match over Nick King, Jax Johnson, Axel Rico and Mario Pardua. The veteran Jaz came out victorious in what turned to be a showcase match for the rest of the young wrestlers in the match.

In a grudge tag team match, co-holder of the CSW Tag Team Championship Steve Boz of the Bruz Bros. and replacement partner Jake Painter defeated C & C Destruction (Cody James and Chris Miller) after the young team of Neon Noize (Kota Holliday and Eric Schultz) provided a distraction.

Boz and Painter utilized some good double-teaming late in the match and Boz secured the 3-count on Miller. Boz’s regular partner TJ Steel was unable to appear. At the previous CSW event, Boz was attacked and didn’t make the show and Steel teamed up with Painter. After the loss, Jones got in the face of Ahrendt and made it clear he wanted another crack at the Bruz Bros once they are back together.

In the semi-main, “The Burning” defeated the team of Sabin Gauge, Da Cornboii and Sabotage. It was a clinic of violence for Capri and his cohorts against the team of upstarts. Capri pinned Sabotage after a crazy six-man skirmish near the end of the match.

All in all, CSW presented an entertaining mix of young and veteran talent on the Chicago and Midwestern scene. The company does a great job of advancing storylines from one show to the next, which helps bring in the return customers and retain loyal fans.
